Spend 6 weeks this summer helping kids to learn STEM, Reading, and Soft Skills as a Camden Dream Center Children’s Defense Fund Servant Leader Intern AND get paid $20/hr. ($700.00 per week) to do so.

“The Children’s Defense Fund’s mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.” Its Freedom Schoolsâ is a nation-wide coordinated initiative in partnership with local community organizations - Camden Dream Center.

The Camden Dream Center Dream CDF Freedom Schools® is a 6-week activity-based Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) summer program that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. It focuses on serving K-8 scholars in Camden’s underserved community to develop a capacity and love for reading, STEM, and improve parental engagement through:

 

  1. High quality academic enrichment,
  2. Parent/family involvement,
  3. Social action and civic engagement,
  4. Intergenerational servant leadership, and
  5. Nutrition, health and mental health.

College-age young adults and recent college graduates play a key role in the summer program as Servant Leader Intern (SLI) serving as teachers, and leading 10 students through the Reading, STEM, and Soft Skills curricula and have a role in designing instruction specific to your classroom. “Interning with the Camden Dream Center has been such a rewarding experience. Being able to work with the scholars and share a passion for learning and STEM is something that I will never forget. Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as a positive role model for all scholars.
  • Supervise and maintain safety of scholars.
  • Maintain a professional decorum.
  • Set up, manage and break down classroom.
  • Attend all required training sessions.
  • Work with site staff to ensure that all program components are implemented with fidelity.

Qualifications

 

  • Must have completed at least one year of college in good academic standing.
  • Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team.
  • Solid commitment to the success and well-being of children.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
